Last year I undertook a commission of a 6R4. Nothing wrong with that you say. Any Issues? Well 1: it didn't have any stripes and just minimal Logos. 2: It was Blue.
From the point of view of not having stripes or big Logo's, I had to recreate the shape of the car purely with colour, shade and the effects of light. Shouldn't be that hard. Well that's what I thought. While it never seemed to be a problem with other base colour's on other projects. White, Red, Yellow, Green not a problem. Blue did in fact present a problem. Some how the application of light and dark shading in Blue on the white background of a Computer Screen. I just couldn't make it work! They just clashed too much leading to masses of trial and error. The answer, Silly as it sounds, I needed an undercoat and I had to find an undercoat before I could recreate the number shades of Blue required. The undercoat proved to be the lightest blue on the car. From there I could work up the the darkest blue. There were also times when I had to inform myself "Paul, Its only supposed to be a cartoon!"
Any End Up.. Here we are and another Commission and a nice opening in my Diary to work on it, and this time, the car has stripes it has Strip. Lots of Stripes. Lots and Lots of Stripes. And its Blue!
Now when I said had a window in which to draw this car. The window still included building the new Rallyist.Art Website. Closing The Rallyist Publications Site, And resigning Rallyist.co for the sake of Rallyist Remastered and the Rallyist350 book/Gallery project. Oh Yes and the new Garage-Art development. That kind of clear calendar. Then along came the eye problem. I don't actually require any medication for my eyes, Well I actually said I don't want any medication ... But shock horror I have to cut down on the Custard creams!!!
Seriously how can anyone Draw anything without Custard creams? No doubt this was a major contributary factor to the Blue issue. Another factor was maybe the two years work that went into Rallyist Remastered.
For this commission we are taking 'Superoo', A blue Superoo at that. Straight away I started recreating the shape of the car in numerous shades of blue working from a light blue under coat. The detail going off the scale. Still struggling some what and working under limited Screen Time, the car is taking shape. Of course in my near obsession over blue and hours of work, I failed to take in to account most of this work will in fact get covered up by the stripes and Logos. And remember, 'Its only supposed to be a cartoon'.
Anyway I am back on track with the commission, I think, complete with a new look for the Driver & Co in future output. Note the eyes. Rallyist.Art has been remodeled, Rallyist.co has a new front page, with a new bookshop page. Prints, Garage-Art and Merchandise ongoing.
Could do with a few more book sales if any one is interested. Remember I still have an Art Gallery to build.
